His sculptures are as beautiful as they are mesmerizing, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading how he came to create them.
Amoloria's art is constructed, for the most part, from pieces of watches: their bands, clasps, faces, wheels, hairsprings, you name it, with the occasional addition of random odds and ends repurposed to enhance a particular piece. I have always been fascinated by "found art," where artists take random items, even litter, to create something better and meaningful again. Amoloria does this and more. As the title hints, "trash to treasure." Usually, these discarded and salvaged components have little value on their own, but in Amoloria's case, he has dipped into his valuable, highly-prized, and lifelong collection of watches and their spare parts, including antiques or tiny, handmade wonders, many embellished with real gemstones.
The largest work is a map of the continent of Australia, highlighting iconic places, features, or purposes of each individual state with small, amazing sculptures. Readers will enjoy not only the individual art pieces but also the collected whole, which is an eye-popping marvel. (And they'll learn stuff about Australia, too.) There's so much detail with intricate surprises lurking among the watch faces, nooks and crannies; I could have spent an entire evening just looking at it.
The photographs of his work are vivid and stark against their dark backgrounds; there's just not enough of them. To be fair, I don't know if there could ever be enough photos included to satisfy my desire to really see everything, and perhaps that could only be accomplished by seeing these items in person.
Amoloria's art came out of his grief over the loss of their only child, Mary Jo, and many of the pieces are a whimsical tribute to her memory. I loved how each featured sculpture's meaning was revealed, and its components and construction details were described. As part of talking about his creative journey, Amoloria reveals his life history and how he was impacted by his family, choices, and chance encounters that altered his life path. He has led a fascinating life, and his story is compelling. My only complaint is that the finished book I purchased could have used another pass by an editor to catch typos, missing words in sentences, and repetitive passages. There are duplicate paragraphs, one after the other, on the page describing "The Ghan."
